Interview Techniques

The client likes what they see on your CV, so the next step is to meet with you face to face. In a situation where all CV’s show similar qualifications and skill sets, the interview is the key differentiator which gives you the opportunity to show why you are the best person for the job.

Interview Preparation – ‘If you fail to prepare, be prepared to fail.’

Conducting research into a business reveals a genuine interest in the role, shows determination to impress at interview, conveys professionalism and enables you to make conversation during those awkward silences;
  • visit the company website
  • review the company accounts
  • search for press releases on FT.com
  • ask your recruitment consultant to explain why there is a vacancy, where the position fits into the accounting team, who will interview you, what is their position, what sort of character they are….
  • Stage a mock interview with your recruitment consultant who can advise you on potential questions and how to structure answers to the questions
  • Prepare a list of questions to ask at the end of the interview – never walk away without asking at least one question. Your consultant can advise with this.
At the interview
  • Arrive in good time – do a dummy run if you get the chance
  • Be polite and friendly
  • Offer a firm handshake
  • Look smart and professional (preferably with polished shoes!)
  • Thank the interviewer for taking time to meet you
  • DO NOT cross your arms and try not to yawn
  • Avoid using over familiar language such as “mate” or “love” and “hello” always sounds more professional than “hi” or “hiya”
  • Listen and talk but try not to interrupt the interviewer whilst they are talking
  • Let the interviewer lead as they know what needs to be covered within the allotted time slot
  • When asked about your strengths and weaknesses, always start with your strengths, followed by just one weakness.
